This Introductory Course: Basic FDA & Hearse Driver Training offered by Independent Funeral Industry Support Services (IFISS) “Funeral School”, is designed for those seeking to gain a deeper understanding of the end-of-life services industry and take the first step. While we can’t guarantee you’ll get hired, you will acquire a combination of practical skills and knowledge to help you stand out to potential employers. The IFISS Certificate you receive at the end of the course will be a valuable addition to your CV..
To participate, you’ll need a current driver’s license, basic literacy and numeracy skills, and good communication abilities. You’ll need to be in good physical and mental health, and be genuinely committed and empathetic towards those who are grieving. We seek individuals who can listen attentively, follow directions, and maintain a professional appearance. Staying calm under pressure and being able to multitask are also key skills.
Course outline
The course is organised to give you a well-rounded theoretical and practical learning experience.
Day 1 covers foundational topics, including Workplace Health & Safety, understanding grief and loss, basic manual handling, and managing relevant paperwork and identification. You’ll also learn about handling coffins, funeral equipment, and hearses.
Day 2 focuses on hands-on experience. This will include driving in a hearse and a mourning coach. where you’ll work through the entire process of setting up and taking part in chapel and church funerals.
