Creating a resilient culture

Over the years, the death industry has opened up and as larger companies formed, more ideas and options have come to light. This has been fantastic for both the industry and family alike, however, it has presented its own set of challenges for both those established and new to funeral care.

And as our industry continues to evolve, organisational culture is more important than ever for a resilient team.

As an industry, we’re not immune to loss. Recently, we lost two important people who contributed greatly to the death care industry: Michael Hopkins and Robby Heritage.

Michael contributed to the embalming fraternity and funeral industry and Robby was a Funeral Director and industry trailblazer. We’d like to recognise the loss of both Michael and Robby, known throughout the industry by many and all ages. 

When Robby started in the industry, it was more intimate. People knew their local Funeral Director, who often operated a family-owned business. The demands from families were different in the more male-dominated industry. 

Over the years, larger companies have joined the industry, with new ideas and options available to families. Now we have more non-denominational funerals, family participation has increased and services are more personalised. 


Still, the wider scope of options available also presents challenges for those new and established in the death care industry. Long-term, experienced Funeral Directors might be more accustomed to traditional services, while a new person to the industry is presented with greater demands than may have been anticipated.

So how can companies navigate this new era of funeral care? 

Having the right mindset, flexibility and confidence to deal with the new dynamics is important, however, the right culture within an organisation is vital. A culture of support, sharing of ideas, education and ongoing learning is so essential. 

If your organisational culture helps people have the right mindset to be in the industry and deal with the demands and wonderful changes, your team will have the longevity and resilience to tackle any challenge and bounce back.
